Rene Gilbert Jaso, MD., ABIM, FACS

Graduated from A&M at Kingsville 1970

Graduated from the College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University in 1973

Board certified in Internal Medicine and General Surgery

While in Med school instrumental in founding several indigent care clinics in rural Michigan

Served as a flight surgeon in U.S. Army

Supported the Presidential Flight Detachment and was deployed to Northern Africa in support of Special Operations

After many years garnering broad clinical experience as a general practitioner, Dr Jaso joined the U.S. Air Force to pursue surgical training.

Member of the surgical teaching staff, deployed and taught internationally, supported and trained special operations teams and instrumental in the redefining of mobile surgical teams designed to function in support of combatants in the far forward arena.

Involved in humanitarian missions and travel to countries saddled with civil unrest tasked with teaching critical skills and fostering good will on the part of our government.

Left active duty 1996 and joined the surgical staff of University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio while establishing a general surgery practice in San Antonio.

Remained in reserve forces until March 2008 when he retired as Commander of the 433rd
MDS the 433rd AirLift Wing.

While in the reserves, was deployed numerous times to include 2 tours in Iraq: Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Served as in-theater combat surgeon.

During Dr Jaso’s extensive career in both Military and civilian medicine he witnessed firsthand the effects obesity has had on the health of those in our community. True to his military character, he has chosen not to standby but to make a stand and do something to alleviate this burden. Dr Jaso has added the Lap Band to his repertoire of surgical specialties.
