Why Consider Surgery
Morbid obesity is typically defined as being 100 pounds or more over ideal body weight or having a body mass index of 40 or higher. Obesity becomes "morbid" when it reaches the point of significantly increasing the risk of one or more obesity-related health conditions or serious diseases. Obesity-related illnesses include, but are not limited to: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, depression, sleep apnea, reflux, infertility and urinary stress incontinence.
The word "bariatric" means weight loss treatment. At Methodist Health for Life Center, our team of credentialed bariatric surgeons and our dedicated bariatric staff are here to help you attain your goal of achieving health for life. Transform your life today.
The causes of obesity are multiple and complex. Despite public opinion, it is not simply a result of overeating. Research has shown an underlying genetic factor in many cases. Other factors may contribute to obesity such as heredity, environment, metabolism and eating disorders. Studies have demonstrated that once the problem has been established, efforts such as dieting and exercise have a limited ability to provide effective long term results.
